Tis’ The Season For Chai

As the warm summer air shifts into a cool breeze, I find myself reaching for cup after cup of Masala Chai tea. The warming spices compliment fall cuisine and fill my kitchen with an irresistible aroma.
Although commonly referred to as “Chai” in the U.S., the proper name is “Masala Chai,” since in the Hindi language “Chai” simply translates to “Tea.” Masala Chai refers to the blend of aromatic herbs, spices and Indian black tea (most likely an Assam).
The three most common ingredients used in creating that unique Chai flavor, are ginger, cardamom and cinnamon. Although several other ingredients can make their way into a Chai blend to add an extra flavor profile, such as vanilla, star anise, cloves and peppercorn. I find that the Vanilla adds just the perfect hint of decadent sweetness, which is why I can’t get enough of Masala Chai Flavored & Scented Black Tea: Black tea from India blended with ginger, cinnamon, cardamom and vanilla. Beyond the traditional Masala Chai, there are several other Chai blends that will excite any spicy palate, such as Rooibos Chai, White Ayurvedic Chai Tea and many more.
The hearty black tea is the perfect base not only for the fragrant spices, but also for a dash of milk and sweetener of choice (I prefer rock cane sugar or a local honey). The soothing Chai Latte is my favorite fall treat, best enjoyed outside while watching the vibrant leaves rustle in the wind at sunset.
Although I am saddened to tuck my iced tea pitchers back into the cabinets, I’m overjoyed with anticipation of warming up to a cup of Masala Chai!
Although “chai” is not part of the name, Spice of Life white tea is another spicy blend that hits to spot on these brisk mornings and evenings as the leaves start to fall. The citrus tones remind me of the summer days and the spicy blend warms me through the cooling days. Maybe cooler weather isn’t so bad after all.
