Pregnancy and Tea: Mothers-to-be Rejoice!
Rooibos is here to rescue you! Rooibos teas are the perfect solution for pregnancy, since they actually help with common issues that pregnant women face and don’t add a drop of caffeine to your diet. 0h – and they taste incredibly good.
Wait. What is Rooibos?
Rooibos is a member of the legume family of plants and is only grown in the Cedarburg Mountain region in South Africa. This naturally caffeine-free herbal tea is extremely high in antioxidants and Vitamin C, and is low in tannins. Rooibos teas may also help to relieve allergies, increase iron absorption, and aid in digestion. They also promote healthy skin, teeth, and bones and are suitable for those with a sensitive central nervous system.
And how does Rooibos help with Pregnancy?
Rooibos teas are by far the best choice for pregnancy. First, they help relieve insomnia, since they have a wonderful, soothing effect on the central nervous system. And since they are caffeine-free, you can have a cup of hot, soothing tea to rock you to sleep. Rooibos tea also aids in relieving stomach and digestive problems associated with pregnancy like nausea, heartburn, and constipation. And it contains no oxalic acid so it can be used safely by those with worrisome kidney stones. Rooibos increases your iron absorption and is an anti-inflammatory (to help those swelling feet, for example).
This wonderful herbal tea also helps those who suffer from irritability, stress, headaches, tension, mild depression or hypertension, whether pregnant or not. Scientists have found that Rooibos tea contains a mimic of the enzyme Super Oxide Dismutase (S.O.D.), an antioxidant which attacks free radicals and limits their damaging effects. Free radicals are the toxic by-products of natural biological processes that can damage healthy cells, weaken our immune system, and possibly lead to cancer.
Rooibos teas are delicious iced or hot and come in a wide variety of flavors. Also try our Honeybush tea, which is a relative of the Rooibos plant.
In South Africa Rooibos tea has been consumed for 30+ years with mothers swearing that it helps with common infant ailments like colic, stomach cramps and fussy babies. Rooibos is effective for relieving skin irritations such as diaper rash and eczema. Brew a cup and let it cool down before applying like a salve to the irritated area.
The American Pregnancy Association also recommends these other teas for pregnant women:
- Chamomile tea – In moderation – High in calcium and magnesium, also helps with sleeplessness and inflammation of joints.
- Peppermint Leaf – Helpful in relieving nausea/morning sickness and flatulence.
Research suggests that pregnant women should significantly reduce or omit caffeine from their diet during pregnancy. Black teas, oolong teas and green teas all contain at least 5% caffeine. White teas have around 1% caffeine, depending on the tea. Which is why we recommend herbal teas for pregnancy; most herbal teas are caffeine-free. Note that Mate Teas have the same amount of caffeine as coffee, so they are not recommended.
Please speak with your physician before starting an herbal tea regimen when you are pregnant. You can shop our Rooibos teas here.
And congratulations!
although this article says to drink chamomile tea for pregnancy, the key word in that is MODERATION. when we were trained we were advised to stay clear of it all together for it may cause problems with the baby. if you want relaxation, go for lavendar or jasmine.
