Cool Off With Iced Green Teas

As the summer heat rises, we all search for a cool and refreshing sip to soothe our body and mind. Take a few moments to steep and ice a pitcher of green tea and you’ll be set for the summer. Beyond the refreshing flavor and cooling effect, iced green tea offers incredible health benefits. From boosting the immune system, regulating blood sugar, soothing the digestive system, lowering cholesterol, to promoting healthy skin, teeth and bones, green tea packs a powerful punch of healthy effects.

In order to make the perfect pitcher of iced green tea, you have two options:

  1. Steep 1-2 teaspoons of tea per 8oz of water. Heat water to 175-180 degrees and steep for up to 1-2 minutes (tea and time variation depends on particular tea). Allow tea to cool to room temperature and then ice. By allowing the tea to cool prior to adding the ice, you will achieve a balanced flavor rather than a watered-down flavor, which can occur as the ice instantly melts.
  2. Although if you want a quick cup and are in a rush, just double the amount of tea suggested and steep accordingly. Once the tea has finished steeping, pour the warm green tea over a glass filled with ice. By doubling the amount of tea, you will balance out the flavor as the ice quickly melts in the glass.

We’ve gathered a few of our favorite green teas to ice and listed them below. Each green tea is blended with flowers, fruits and herbs that still allow the refreshing green tea flavor to shine. And if you’re planning on having a staycation in your backyard this summer, you can at least send your taste buds on an exotic journey through these blended flavors.

Thanks for the recipes and suggestions. I am new to iced tea brewed with loose tea leaves. I recently purchased the Amandine Decanter and made a pot of raspberry iced tea and it turned out wonderfully. I did use a large tea bag for steeping. I am unsure about leaving the tea leaves in the iced tea. Won’t this cause it to become bitter? If I can leave them in can they be left until I am finished drinking the iced tea? I am a bit confused. Thanks for your help.

Another questions…..I says under the info. for the Amandine Decanter that you should use cold brewing for iced tea. I read somewhere else on this blog that you should not use cold brewing method for several reasons. This same blog entry also stated that the Amandine decanter can handle hot water followed by ice – which is the preferred method for brewing iced tea. I am VERY afraid of breaking this very expensive decanter. Please advise.
