A perfect cup should be made in a pre-warmed porcelain teapot, steeped until cool enough to drink. Should be drunk as hot as possible, from a porcelain cup. The color cannot be appreciated in a heavy mug. Should be
brewed fairly strong; no milk, no sugar. You get a sweet aftertaste that lasts when drunk really hot and strong. No wimpy infusions. You'll know the real thing. The water should be at a full boil; if it is not boiled enough, the molecules won't be far enough apart to give you a full-bodied brew--you get flavored water. Might as well use instant. If boiled too much, the air is boiled away and it's flat.

The reason for preferring a mug might be that mugs are often thicker and have straight sides, which keeps the tea warmer, longer.
