Beautiful Blooms: Flowering Tea

Beyond its flavor and aroma, a tea’s sensory experience also includes visual beauty. As the water meets the tea, the leaves dance about the pot, unfurling, rising and sinking. Although each tea possesses unique visual elements, a blooming tea is considered to be the most beautiful.

Blooming teas, also known as flowering teas, are created by tying dried tea leaves and flowers with thread. The leaves and flowers are delicately hand tied into balls that bloom into beautiful flower-like shapes when steeped.

These fragrant tea delicacies should be steeped in a glass teapot. As the floral aromas begin to rise from the teapot, you’ll find that your attention is drawn to the flowering tea that is blossoming right before your eyes. Best of all, you can resteep the blossom several times.

The flowers most used in this artisan tea include jasmine, hibiscus, lily and chrysanthemum. These floral flavors and aromas pair perfectly with delicate white teas.

White tea generally steeps for only a minute or two. What makes blooming tea different since it is not removed from the pot?

Jeanie, sorry for the confusion. I do recommend that you remove the blossom from the pot after the normal steeping time to avoid overbrewing. However, you might want to brew the entire pot, watch the flowering tea blossom, pour the contents of the pot into cups, and then allow the blossomed tea to remain inside the empty pot. Then feel free to add more water when you’re ready for another steep.
