Breakfast Teas: Recommended Replacements for Coffee
Do you enjoy that steaming cup of joe in the morning? We all do, but it isn’t helping your health! There are several tea alternatives to coffee that are actually healthy for your body and can get you going. This post will offer some of the popular choices that work great as coffee replacements.
The first objection is always caffeine: one cup of coffee can help kick start your day. But there are teas that can make up the difference. And the caffeine from tea is absorbed more slowly than the caffeine from coffee, so it can help avoid the jitteriness associated with coffee and you won’t have a serious drop in energy when the caffeine wears out. Mate teas, in particular, offer the same amount of caffeine as coffee and often have a “coffee-like” taste, which makes switching easier.
So let’s start with the most popular replacement for coffee: MateVana herbal tea. This tea has 100% of the caffeine in a cup of coffee and has a chocolately, nutty taste that coffee lovers tend to enjoy. The Today Show recently offered it as a good replacement for that morning cup of coffee. And Mate teas are full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants (you won’t get that from coffee!).
The traditional morning teas are black teas, which have about 20% of the caffeine in a cup of coffee. In Britain, these are usually consumed with milk, which makes them more coffee-like, but also takes away some of the health benefits. One popular choice is Earl Grey Creme. This black tea flavored with Bergamot oil has a strong, full taste that coffee lovers will enjoy. And the Bergamot oil also acts as a mild natural anti-depressant.
Another excellent black tea for breakfast is Ceylon Vithanakande, which is actually a mix of three black teas: Assam, Ceylon, and China black tea. It is one of the best black teas available and has a strong, complex flavor that you’ll enjoy.
Most of the black teas can be tried as coffee replacements, but those two are probably the best. And the MateVana should be your first attempt, since it is the most like coffee. If you’re willing to be a bit more adventurous, you could also try an Oolong tea. Oolongs are basically between green teas and black teas in terms of processing, so they typically have a bit more of the health benefits that you can find in a cup of green tea. But they still have a good amount of caffeine; about 10-15% of the caffeine in a cup of coffee.
Iron Buddha Oolong is a delicious tea, particularly for breakfast. It isn’t a taste replacement for coffee and doesn’t share many of the characteristics you would associate with coffee (other than being a hot beverage). But it is very healthy and will help your body with cholesterol and fat content in the blood. This is a perfect coffee replacement for those trying to lose some weight. And if you don’t add sugar or milk, it has zero calories. That’s right: zero.
These are just a few suggestions for teas that can replace your morning cup of coffee and offer you a healthier lifestyle. If you’re new to tea, I recommend stopping in a Teavana store and testing a few of these out. Taste is probably the most important choice in trying to replace your morning coffee; if you don’t like the taste of your replacement tea, you’re likely to go back to coffee!
So try it out today! Don’t wait another minute to start working on a healthier lifestyle.
